The workshop sought to build the selection of work that’s been performed in measuring research results and to offer a forum to examine its method. The workshop was inspired by a 2009 letter by Congressman Rush Holt (D-New Jersey). He asked the National Academies to start looking into a variety of complex and interconnected problems, like the short-term and long-term economic and non-economic effect of national research funding, variables that determine whether federally funded research discoveries lead to economic gains, and quantification of these consequences of research on federal safety , the environment, health, schooling , public wellbeing, and decision making.
