USMLE Step 1 Lecture Notes (Kaplan) 2018 Immunology and Microbiology Pdf written by Tiffany L. Alley, Kim Moscatello, Christopher C. Keller. The immune system is intended to recognize and react to itself antigen in a coordinated fashion. Furthermore, cells which are diseased, damaged, dying or distressed are recognized and removed by the immune system. The immune system is split into two numerical arms: the innate and the adaptive immune systems. Innate immunity provides the human body’s first line of defense against infectious agents. The innate and adaptive arms of the immune reaction work in alliance to prevent an illness.
After a pathogen has broken during the anatomic and physiological obstacles, the innate immune reaction is instantly triggered, oftentimes it’s able to contain and remove the infection. When the innate immune reaction is not able to control the replication of a pathogen, the adaptive immune reaction is engaged and triggered by the innate immune reaction in an antigen specific manner. Normally, it requires 1-2 weeks following the principal disease because of its adaptive immune reaction to start clearance of the disease through the activity of cells or effect and antibodies. After a disease has been removed, both innate and adaptive immune reactions cease. Antibodies and residual cells or effect are still offer protective immunity, while memory cells provide long term immunologic protection against subsequent infection
